Jewish Monasticism

Is there anything in Judaism currently that is equivalent or nearly equivalent to Christian, Buddhist, or Taoist monasticism? I know of the sofrim - do they live monastic lifestyles in addition to the scribal ways? Will a synagogue or temple support one as a monastery does a monk? Thanks in advance.

Chris
