while Tertullian is 2nd century. A couple of questions: does the GR incorporate material composed earlier? Even from as far back as the 2nd century, perhaps? if not, is there any other Judaic tradition that would have associated Esau with idolatry, or would it be possible that the association would have circulating in any oral form at the time of Tertullian? Thanks very much!

    Esau and idolatry

Hi there...I'm doing some research into Tertullian, and have noted that both he and the Genesis Rabbah associate Esau with idolatry. I would love to be able to say that Tertullian was familiar (and indeed, to some extent reliant) on the Midrashic tradition, but as far as I know, the GR is fifth century, while Tertullian is 2nd century.
